Historical Facts: American and Japanese Rule in the Philippines

This was based on Reader's Digest: The Story of the Filipino People - Parts 6 and 7 ( Under the Stars and Stripes  and The Japanese Occupation ) by Milagros C. Guerrero and Ricardo T. Jose.      Now that I think about it, I would call the Spanish occupation "the first storm," the American occupation "the second storm," and the Japanese occupation "the third storm." The "between the storm" parts would be 1898 - 1901 and 1935 - 1941.  Part 1 - The Second Storm (1901 - 1935)     After the Philippine-American War, the United States turned the Philippines into a colony. They gained it in the Treaty of Paris along with Puerto Rico, Cuba, and some other islands. The Americans needed to keep it away from Spain, France, and Germany.      Under Spanish rule, the Filipinos were taught Catholicism. But the Americans were mainly Methodist (a sect of Protestantism). American missionaries were sent to the Philippines, although most Filipinos remained C

Historical Facts: Ferdinand Magellan's Expedition

This was based on Reader's Digest: The Story of the Filipino People (Part 3) by Jose S. Arcilla.  Magellan's Early Expeditions and the Way to Asia     There was a man named Ferdinand Magellan. He was born in Portugal to the lower part of the nobility. In 1511, Magellan explored India, Malacca, and Indonesia.      Now, here's the problem. To go to Asia, he would have to go around Africa. In 1492, Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer working for Spain, explored the Americas. To the Europeans, it was a new continent. Since most explorers knew the world is round, they knew Asia would be on the other side.       From Portugal to Spain     One time, Magellan was fighting the Moors in North Africa. He won, and asked for a raise from King Manuel of Portugal. But the king declined.      Now, to understand this next part, you have to know the rivalry between Spain and Portugal over colonization. Spain's first colonies were in the Americas, while Portugal wanted to get t

The True West German Flag

Image
https://www.britannica.com/topic/flag-of-Germany      Hey Enotitans! So, this isn't much. But I just wanted to inform you about what West Germany's flag was. In case you don't know, West Germany was formed in 1949 after the British, American, and French occupation zones in Germany merged. The state technically still exists today in the form of modern Germany, because German reunification was actually West Germany absorbing East Germany's territory. (East Germany was allied to the Soviets during the Cold War, while West Germany was allied to the Americans.)     One time, I was watching this YouTube video about the biggest defeats in the history of the FIFA World Cup. (Yes, I am a bit of a sports fan.) One was Hungary defeating West Germany 8-3 in the 1954 World Cup.  FUN FACT: West Germany got revenge by beating Hungary in the championship match that same tournament.      But I want you to look at the West German flag displayed there. It's like the modern flag,

Historical Facts: The 1867 Compromise and the Austro-Hungarian Empire

Image
Okay. I think I gave you the end before the beginning, because this is about the rise of Austria-Hungary. If you didn't read the last article , that's on the fall of Austria-Hungary. But, I didn't know I would post on this. So, let's go!     Let's look at Austria in 1867. The previous year, they lost a war to Prussia and Italy. After Prussia defeated Austria, the other German states dependent on Austria had an uncertain future. (This would be resolved after the Franco-Prussian War.) But Austria also had an uncertain future. After losing wars, you would generally have a bad economy. Austria was no exception. And Austria already had many ethnicities in their empire. As I said in the last article, Austria had many minorities. In fact, I'll list just some of the most significant minorities in the Austrian Empire: Czechs Slovaks Poles Ukrainians Romanians Hungarians Serbs Croats Slovenes Italians     If this doesn't sound too complicated to you, think about

Historical Facts: Collapse of Austria-Hungary

Image
Look at Austria. It's a small, landlocked country not in any major alliance. That's because Austria, like Switzerland, is a neutral country. But it wasn't always like this. Austria used to be a great power. At one time, Austria had an empire so big that it was hard to contain the many ethnicities. (Several peoples, including Hungarians, Romanians, and Serbs lived in the Austrian Empire.) So in 1867, they gave some autonomy to the Hungarians. This created Austria-Hungary. However, in World War I, the Empire joined the Central Powers. As we know, they lost. This ended Austria-Hungary. Both lost significant territory, even majority German and Hungarian lands. Let's check it today on Historical Facts.  Treaty of Saint Germain-en-Laye (Austria/Cisleithania)     This first treaty was for the Austrian (Cisleithanian) part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. (Cisleithania refers to the Austrian part of the empire.) After the war, Austria needed to rebuild. So the Republic of G

Historical Facts: The Polish Partitions

Image
Alright. I know I said that my next post will be on my Visita Iglesia. But don't worry. It's coming soon! Just a few more days.      Anyway, Poland has such a history of being partitioned and annexed. Yet it kept fighting back. Still, they have such a tough history. They only truly gained independence in 1990, a mere 34 years ago. But why is it like this? Why did Poland have to suffer so much? Find out today on Historical Facts.  The First Partition (1772)      From the beginning of the 18th century to the end of World War I, the Russians and Austrians were big rivals. In 1772, it seemed almost inevitable that Russia and Austria would go to war. But to prevent this, Prussia had an idea. They decided to partition Poland among themselves. This marked the beginning of Poland's partitions. Poland was still a large empire in union with Lithuania, known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but this was the beginning of the end for the empire.       https://britannica.com/e

News - Mar 8, 2024 Victory in the Civil War      Despite the capture of New Enotita, the former President was evacuated to Olsen. At the Battle of Olsen, however, on February 6, the President was captured. The civil war was over.  Complicated Dynamics in the Mariquinium      The Protectorate of the Mariquinium was established the previous month, but due to a few problems, the nation was re-annexed. However, a few days ago, we decided to give it independence as the Free State of the Mariquinium.  The Chancellor's Visita Iglesia (Visit Churches)      As you know, Enotita is a secular nation. But I, the Chancellor, am Catholic, and I decided to visit churches in what was known as the Visita Iglesia. It's a Filipino tradition that I tried in the Philippine province of Laguna. I enjoyed it, and will post a blog on it soon. (Note: Again, Enotita is a secular nation, and this was a personal activity, rather than a political one.)      Thank you for reading The Enotita Times.

Historical Facts: The First and Second Balkan Wars

Let's be honest. This won't be easy. The Balkan Wars were chaotic and dramatic. You'll soon see why. But we're going to cover it today. Why did each war happen? Let's find out on Historical Facts.  Part 1 - The First Balkan War (1912 - 1913)     By 1912, some non-Turkish people in the Balkans already had their independence. Those states were Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece. Despite that, however, the Ottoman Empire was still holding on to some of its Balkan lands. So Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, and Greece formed the Balkan League and declared war on the Ottoman Empire.      Each nation had its own interests, some even clashing with the other interests. Bulgaria wanted Macedonia, Thessaloniki, and Thrace. Greece also wanted Thrace, plus parts of Anatolia. Serbia wanted Macedonia. And while Montenegro wanted some land, I'm not actually sure what that land is called. Anyway, the First Balkan War commenced.      Now, here's the problem.

Historical Facts: What is Macedonia/North Macedonia?

If you're like me and know history from the ancient world to the present, the term "Macedonia" might sound confusing to you. That's because Macedonia is a region once contested by foreign powers, yet is now also a country. If you don't know what Macedonia (or now, North Macedonia) even is, don't worry. Today, we'll talk about what it is.      If you studied history chronologically, you probably first heard the term "Macedonia" when you studied Alexander the Great. His empire controlled a significant part of Europe and Asia, with its capital at the ancient city of Babylon. However, in 323 BCE, Alexander died, and his empire was split. The Balkan part of the empire became known as the Macedonian dynasty.      Starting in around 170 BCE, the Roman Empire conquered Macedonia. For several years, it was under Roman rule. However, the Ottoman Empire conquered Macedonia towards the end of the Middle Ages.       Macedonia would remain under Ottoman r

History of Enotita

Okay, this will be a long one. This is the entire history of Enotita. While the nation has only existed for around 110 days, it has a very complicated history that is half-joke, half-real. So this is the history of Enotita.      Now, to be clear, Enotita was not the first nation I ruled. Even a few days after I proclaimed Enotita, I was the king of Triberia, which was a nation contesting Liberland, another micronation in the same land. The territory, however, was so far away from the Philippines. It was located on the Danube River, but not claimed by Croatia or Serbia. So I decided to abandon Triberia. I didn't really get an heir to continue leadership in the former Triberia, as Liberland was already in control.      November 26, 2023 was a historic day. That was the day that Enotita was proclaimed in my bedroom. It wasn't really an organized state at that time. I knew my dad and I would rule, but I wasn't sure about how we would rule. (I should've planned before

News - Feb 1, 2024 Civil War Almost Finished      The civil war against the former president's Democratic Republic is almost done. We are advancing in New Enotita, the last state we need to capture.  Federal Enotita      Enotita is now a federal country. The four states are Olsen, New Enotita, Sucatia, and the Mariquinium.  Return of the Mariquinium To Come      The state of the Mariquinium will be returned to the Philippines on February 9, 2024, as a part of the National Capital Region.  Olympic Entrance Rejected, Micro Olympics to Be Held      The Paris Olympics is this year, and we decided to apply for membership. However, we were rudely rejected by the Olympic officials. Instead, we will host the 2024 Enotita Micro Olympics in concert with the Paris Olympics.  This issue was published by Chancellor Rafael Mercado.

Mario's Empire - Part 1

Image
Sorry for delaying "Mario's Empire!" Well, welcome to the series, even though I'm late. This is a good mix of my previous gaming blog and this history blog. If you haven't seen my trailer on the series, please click here . With that out of the way, let's go!     Mario was 7 years old in 1994 when he founded Super Mario Bros. Plumbing (SMBP) with his brother, Luigi. They used an abandoned house across their home as their base. He was only available during summer, as he still went to school. He only got around 7 customers per day, but none knew what he was about to do with the nation of Italy.      When he turned 23, Mario disbanded SMBP to join a professional plumbing company. At this point, he already had an interest in world history, especially the Roman Empire. But he was just a worker living in Rome.      However, in 2016, he was given an address that sounded familiar. It was the Italian parliament. It was there that he realized he could do good in pol

We Won the Civil War!

On February 6, 2024, the Democratic Republic of Enotita, led by President Daddy, and United States of Enotita, led by me, met up at the Battle of Olsen. The Democratic Republic had only 1 division, and no external support. Meanwhile, we had 192 divisions, and support from Germany, France, the Philippines, and Japan. If the only remaining division from the Democratic Republic surrendered, the Enotitan Civil War would end. At 12:30 PM, they did just that. The final division surrendered, and the United States of Enotita was now the sole Enotitan state.      Just four hours after the Democratic Republic surrendered, a victory ceremony was held in New Enotita. I composed a march called "Enotita's Glory" for the ceremony right after the battle. But how did all this happen? Let's find out today.      In January 2024, in a car just outside New Enotita, the president of Enotita, Daddy, fired me and became dictator. I was devastated. I went from founding Enotita to being u

Mario's Empire - Trailer

From Hadrian's Wall in Britannia to the watery city of Constantinople, Rome was a major empire. But in 476, the western half of the empire collapsed. In 1453, the eastern half collapsed too, ending the Roman Empire.      It was 1994. In the city of Rome, a young boy named Mario was a plumber, volunteering for different companies. But in school, his lesson on the Roman Empire changed his life forever.      Mario ran for president in 2024, hoping to restore Italy to its glory days. Will he restore Caesar's dream? Or will he lead the nation to collapse? Find out when Episode 1 of Mario's Empire comes out this Sunday, on the United States of Enotita government blog.       Note: I am officially closing the door on my old blog, mariofromnintendo.blogspot.com . However, I am transplanting its remains to this blog. Plus, the old blog will still be available if you want to check it out. This will be related to the old Kingdomia stories, by the way. The characters from that show

Protectorate of the Mariquinium

As you read on the Enotita Times, the Mariquinium will be returned to the Philippines on Feb 9. Well, we had a change of plans. Instead of returning the Mariquinium, we'll turn it into a protectorate. The protectorate exists already.      We agreed on Feb 1 in the Treaty of the Mariquinium that the state will be returned on Feb 9 unless the Philippines decides to cancel the return earlier. However, yesterday, the Pact of Cancelation was signed. And now, the Protectorate of the Mariquinium exists. However, it's not our puppet state. If they get attacked, we have to defend them, but not vice versa.      The flag of the Mariquinium is to be designed. We're open for suggestions. If you want to suggest a flag, please make one by clicking here . (Update: The domain was closed already. Too bad!) Otherwise, I will design one myself.      Thanks for reading!

Big Announcement!

Our government blog now has pages! For laptop and PC, it will always be on the screen. For iOS and Android, you'll have to click on the menu.  Military Department     On the Military Department page, you can donate to the army! (We don't have a Navy and Air Force.) There is also a counter for donations that is updated from time to time. (Please note that donations are open only during times of war, like the civil war right now.) The Enotita Times - Newspaper     The Enotita Times is Enotita's official newspaper. (Please note that The Enotita Times has no association with the Greek leftist newspaper named Enotita.) Starting February 1, 2024, news updates will be available on the page. But when the month ends and the page changes, we will still let you read previous headlines through an archive.      New pages will be released from time to time, so keep checking the side bar if a new page has popped up!

The Zimmerman Telegram - Big Mistake!

In my opinion, if the Germans never sent the Zimmerman Telegram, the Central Powers might have won. Out of all the mistakes in world history, it would be up there as one of the worst. Let's see why.      The Zimmerman Telegram was sent by Germany to Mexico in 1917 during World War I. They wanted to form a coalition with Mexico against the United States. In return, Mexico would regain Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.  Mexico rejected this, but something even more important happened.  You see, British intelligence detected the telegram, and they sent it to Washington. ( source ) The American government was furious. So they declared war on Germany.      Now, why was this a big mistake? Well, you see, the Central Powers were winning until the Americans joined. Romania and Serbia had capitulated by 1917, and Russia was close to losing. (They did leave later on.) Also, Germany was getting close to Paris. They should have just kept the Americans out of the war. This was a very bad mov

National Anthem of Enotita

Our national anthem used to be "Let Us Defend Enotita." The tune was "Ode to Joy" by Ludwig van Beethoven, and I wrote the lyrics. The first version was too centered around me however, so I wrote new lyrics. Nonetheless, our anthem remained a significant part of the country for a while.      However, since our president became dictator, and we formed the Enotitan Republic, the anthem has become synonymous with his fascist-style regime. (By the way, we're now a parliamentary monarchy, with our empress being a purely symbolic figure.) So we switched our anthem to "Arisen From Naked Ruins," a translation of the East German anthem but more centered around Enotita. (We also have a royal anthem. I might upload that.)     Here is our national anthem:

The Sesame War - Part 4 (The End)

Welcome back to the Sesame War! Well, the war has already ended, but this is the aftermath. Let's see how the new nations of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia dealt with the neo-Sesames.      In Bohemia, the Friends of Abby party currently holds the chancellor, Frank Arthur. Now, he actually negotiated in 2021 about reunification with Moravia. But the Treaty of Prague that divided Bohemia-Moravia in 1963 said that Bohemia and Moravia "shall never reunite to prevent Sesame Street's return." The name of Arthur's party explicitly states that they are friends of Abby Cadabby. (Yes, I have been spelling her name wrong the whole time. Haha!) But the treaty had already been signed. So the president of Moravia, Evan King, rejected the offer.      However, despite Moravia having an anti-Sesame president, the senate of Moravia has never had an election where their two neo-Sesame parties, Super Sesame and Cadabby Group, were absent. Moreover, they're in an alliance wit

Alternate WWI: Part 1 - Pre-War Dynamics

I know I've been leaving you hanging on the Sesame War, but I guarantee you that Part 4 will come out soon. With that clear, welcome to Part 1 of my alternate First World War. The alliances will be very different here. Let's go, Enotitans! Also, please read until the end for a very important announcement.     In 1866, the Austro-Prussian War was fought. (That happened in real life.) After that, Austria and Prussia (later the German Empire) both competed to become the superior Germanic nation.      Then, in 1870, the Franco-Prussian War was fought. (This was also a real war.) But since the French leader was Napoleon III, we actually have Great Britain joining on the side of Prussia here, making for our first fictional event. The Treaty of Normandy was signed a year later, giving Alsace-Lorraine to the newly formed German Empire, and Brittany to the United Kingdom. Later that year, the Germans and Brits signed the London Pact, which was like the real Entente Cordiale, but fo

Blog Update!

Hey guys! You may have noticed that the blog name changed from "The OttoRoman Empire" to "Democratic Republic of Enotita." ( Enotita means "unity" in Greek.) Well, I have a few things to explain. Let's go, Enotitans!     First of all, what is Enotita? It's my micronation that unites my closest relatives' houses and my grandma's former house under a single state. (It's in the Philippines.) Our city-provinces are Enotita City (the capital), New Enotita, Sucatia, and the Mariquinium. We're a democratic republic that follows my ideology of Rafaelism. (Rafael is my real name, and Augustus II is a fake name. So I named my ideology Rafaelism.) It's complicated to study, and I might make a separate post on that. But basically, we tax the rich and give to the poor. (Not Marxism, okay?) We'll install public ATMs around the country.      We're a parliamentary republic with a president and a chancellor. I'm the chancellor,

The Sesame War - Part 3

Guys, welcome back to the Sesame War! We left off with the rapid rise of the Sesame Empire, aka the Czechoslovakian Empire. They had fast war tactics reminiscent of the Mongol Empire. But in 1959, something shocking happened. So let's see what it was. Let's go, OttoRomans!     As the empire rapidly grew, something shocking happened. Military Manager Big Bird, General Ernie, and Colonel Bert split from the Sesame Street Party, leaving the party in the hands of Party Secretary Abby Caddaby. (Judicial Manager Elmo Monster was still there, but he was barely doing anything.)      The new party formed by Bird was called the Czechoslovakian Liberation Organization. Though Caddaby was suspicious that "liberation" meant liberation from Sesame Street, she allowed it due to her trust of Bird, who helped with the growth of Czechoslovakia.       She made a big mistake. On September 7, 1959, Bird started negotiating with the United States and Soviet Union about forming an alli

The Sesame War - Part 2

The Sesame War is back! In Part 1, a new rightist party took over Czechoslovakia, leading to a war. Last time we looked at the front, it was a stalemate. Let’s see what happened now.  Since it was a stalemate, Military Manager Big Bird started drafting troops on January 7, 1954. It was a smart decision. Within 3 months, Warsaw was conquered, and Budapest was encircled, though it was never captured. Just a month later, all of Romania fell, and the Soviet Union was forced to send troops to Bucharest. This failed, however, as Sesame Czechoslovakia managed to capture Moldova in the process.  Both the American and Soviet governments started convincing other countries to join the war to stop Czechoslovakian expansionism. They did make a bit of progress, leading Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece to join the American and Soviet’s sides. These countries made almost no contributions, however.  What was even worse was that Sesame Ships, the new navy of Sesame Street, forcefully made a port in

Nicolae Ceaucescu - Speech Reenactment

Nicolae Ceaucescu was the last communist dictator of Romania, then a member of the Warsaw Pact. In 1989, he ordered a major massacre in the city of Timisoara. So, during his next speech, which was supposed to be for his supporters, the people roared, trying to interrupt him. And it worked! He was able to finish his speech, but not without an interruption. A few days later, he was executed in a summary trial.      I reenacted that same speech that got interrupted using CapCut to add the sound effects. I added clapping because some of his supporters were still there. Here it is:

The Sesame War - Part 1

Welcome to Part 1 of the Sesame War! Here, a new political party in Czechoslovakia forced the United States and Soviet Union to set aside their differences… again. We’ll find out who this political party was in this new series.  It was 1945. World War II just ended, and the United States and Soviet Union entered the Cold War. But a new political party was established in Czechoslovakia that resulted in a full war. Led by Party Secretary Abby Caddaby, Military Manager Big Bird, and Judicial Manager Elmo Monster, the Sesame Street Party set their aim on taking over the country.  Then, in 1948, Joseph Stalin added Czechoslovakia to his list of satellite states. (He did in real life.) But a day before the first speech of the communist party, members of Sesame Street launched a coup that forced the communists to leave. As you can tell, they were against communism. But they were also against democracy. They were on the right of the spectrum.  Eventually, Sesame Street-controlled
